Visitor Updates for The Meadows Assisted Living

We look forward to welcoming our loved ones to Silver Maples as the holidays near! There have been some recent updates from MDHHS regarding visitation at senior residential care facilities, including Assisted Living. The new visitor guidelines are as follows:
• Indoor visitation is always allowed and available for all residents.
• There is no limit to the frequency of visits a resident may receive.
• There is no time limit for the length of a resident’s visit.
• There is no limit on the number of visitors with the resident during their visit. However, physical distancing (especially between different visitor groups) must still be maintained.
• Visitation does not require advanced scheduling to occur.
• Visitors should go directly to the resident’s room and not walk around different halls or common spaces.
• Both fully vaccinated and unvaccinated residents may choose to have physical contact/touch based on their preference and needs.
• Visitation must be conducted in a manner that adheres to the core principals of COVID-19 infection prevention and does not increase risk to others residents. The Core Principals of Infection Prevention include:
o Visitors who have a positive COVID-19 test, symptoms of COVID-19, or currently meet the criteria for quarantine should not enter.
o All visitors and staff will be screened for signs, symptoms and exposure to COVID-19.
o Proper hand hygiene must be adhered to.
o Face coverings, along with 6 feet of physical distancing are required.

Michigan is experiencing another spike in COVID-19 cases. Please continue to follow all of the guidelines above. We are proud to say we have not experienced any COVID-19 cases among our residents since the start of the Pandemic. Thank you for being diligent in protecting yourselves and your loved ones!

Update: July 27, 2021

Staff Positive COVID Test

On Monday, July 26, 2021, one (1) staff member working in the Culinary Department at Silver Maples of Chelsea tested positive for COVID-19 during our required weekly testing of unvaccinated staff.  The employee has been experiencing minor symptoms and is quarantining at home.

The employee last worked on Friday, July 23, 2021.  Our residents may have had some exposure to the staff member; therefore, we are required to test all of our Meadows residents weekly for the next two weeks. We have completed the first round of testing of our residents, which yielded no positive results.  Our last positive staff case has been over three months ago.

The safety of our residents remains our top priority!  Over 74% of our staff are fully vaccinated, which exceeds the state average of 63.2%. We are also happy to share that 100% of our Meadows residents are vaccinated and over 99% of our Maples/Villa residents are fully vaccinated!  At Silver Maples, we have had ZERO positive cases among our resident population since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We continue to implement all of our safety precautions, which include:

  • Daily health screening of all employees
  • Required mask wearing by all staff and residents in the Meadows Assisted Living
  • Weekly COVID-19 testing of all unvaccinated staff members
  • Visitor COVID-19 testing and screening
  • Physical barriers at work stations
  • Additional cleaning, disinfection and hand hygiene, with extra attention to frequently used areas

We will be certain to communicate any additional relevant information.  Our residents are well and have thrived these last 18 months, but we are not out of the woods yet.  Please be diligent and minimize risks in order to continue to keep our residents safe.  Thank you!

Restrictions and Visitation Updates

Governor Whitmer announced that all COVID-19 Epidemic Orders regarding gatherings and masking will be lifted as of June 22, 2021.  It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the first days of summer!

Although masks are no longer required in most areas, and we will now be able to gather in larger groups, there are still restrictions in place to protect our vulnerable populations.

Due to our Home For the Aged (HFA) licensing, the following guidelines continue to be in place for our Meadows Assisted Living community:

  • All Staff and Residents must wear masks at all times when in the Meadows Assisted Living
  • Residents may only enter the Meadows with a scheduled appointment at the hair salon, or for a scheduled visit with a resident
  • Visitors are permitted outdoors, or in resident rooms only.  At this time, visitors are still not permitted to gather in common spaces or dine with our Assisted Living residents.

Updated visitor guidelines at Silver Maples of Chelsea Independent Living:

  • Visitors of all ages are welcome at Silver Maples!
    • Verified Vaccinated Visitors (V^3) are free to join residents in the common spaces, including dining rooms.  They should display their green V^3 badge at all times. (See our receptionist for more information.)
    • Visitors who are not vaccinated (do not have a green V^3 badge) may visit in resident rooms only, or outdoors.

Dining Room Updates:

  • Our dining rooms will open at 100% capacity starting next week on Monday, June 28, 2021.

We continue to take small steps forward and appreciate your support, patience and understanding as we work to slowly relax restrictions.

Visitation Updates for The Meadows (Assisted Living)

We sure have enjoyed having visitors at The Meadows Assisted Living these last several weeks!  There are a few updates regarding visitation that are shared below:

  • COVID testing is required prior to entry for non-vaccinated visitors. All visitors (vaccinated or not) will be required to participate in screening procedures.
  • Appointments for visits are still required for all. Due to screening and testing requirements, pre-scheduled visits may occur between the hours of 9 AM – 7 PM, Monday – Friday, and 10 AM – 4:30 PM Saturday and Sunday only.
  • We are unable to provide any COVID testing on the weekends. Therefore, any visits scheduled for Saturday or Sunday require a COVID test on Thursday or Friday.
  • Visitors must be over the age of 16.
  • All visitors must pre-schedule their visits by calling The Meadows receptionist desk @ 734-475-1490 to schedule their visit, not to exceed two visitors and adhere to a reasonable time limit (two hours or less).
  • Visitors at Silver Maples are permitted in individual apartments only and may not linger in any communal space (including public restrooms).

If residents AND visitors are fully vaccinated:

  • While alone in the resident’s apartment, you may choose to have close contact, including touch and sharing meals without masks. Visitors must, however, wear masks and distance from staff and others that are not part of their visit group and when outside loved ones apartment.
  • Outdoor visits are still recommended. Please enjoy our lovely outdoor space.  Face coverings are not required while visiting outdoors when resident and visitors are all fully vaccinated.

If either resident or visitors are NOT fully vaccinated:

  • Everyone must maintain physical distancing and wear masks
  • However, if the resident is fully vaccinated, they can choose to have close contact, including touch, while both continue to wear well fitted face coverings
  • Outdoor visits are still recommended. Please enjoy our lovely outdoor space.  Face coverings are required for visitors while visiting outdoors.

Indoor visitation will cease for a time period if any COVID-19 cases occur at Silver Maples of Chelsea.  Thank you for continuing to keep the residents of Silver Maples of Chelsea and their loved ones SAFE and WELL!

Update: April 1, 2021

Community Update (Visitor Restrictions Loosened)

As spring approaches, the fresh air, sunshine and a loosening up of some restrictions has provided a renewed sense of hope and purpose at Silver Maples of Chelsea.

We have implemented a Verified Vaccinated Visitor (V^3) Program in our Independent Living neighborhood (Villas/Maples).

The Verified Vaccinated Visitor Program allows fully vaccinated visitors to have unrestricted access to our Maples Independent Living community, although masking, social distancing and screening are still required.

To gain access to the program, visitors must provide a copy of their COVID-19 vaccination record card, verifying they have had both vaccine doses. The second dose (if applicable) needs to be administered at least 14 days prior to presenting their card.
In return, the visitor will receive a laminated card permitting them to socialize anywhere within the community.

Any visitor interested in becoming a V^3, please complete our Verified Vaccinated Visitor Form, make a copy of your vaccination card, and submit to the Maples Receptionist either via email or in person.

This week we were also able to reunite our Meadows and Maples neighbors!

We “opened the doors” between the Meadows Assisted Living and the Maples Independent Living, on Wednesday, March 31, 2021.  These doors had been closed for over a year, since March 13, 2020!  Due to the specific regulations by the MDHHS for Assisted Living communities, there will continue to be some restrictions in place.

Independent Living Maples/Villa Residents:

  • May enter the Meadows neighborhood for two purposes only;

        - Visiting a Meadows resident (in apartments only) or,

       - A scheduled appointment in the Salon.  (The Salon will be moving back to its permanent location on the 2nd floor of The Meadows.)

  • All visits with Meadows residents must be pre-scheduled by calling the Meadows desk at 475-1490.
  • Residents must wear face coverings for the duration of the visits and maintain 6 feet of social distancing at all times.
  • The Beauty Salon will no longer be located in the Maples Craft Room.  All appointments will be held in the Meadows Salon moving forward.
  • Maples/Villa residents may not linger in the Meadows common spaces or use the Meadows as a walk-thru (entering or exiting to the villas.)

Assisted Living Meadows Residents:

  • Our Meadows residents can now freely enjoy access to the entire Silver Maples community!  They may once again visit the library, Garden Room, Café, Art Gallery and other common spaces in the Maples area.
  • Limited dining for dinner in the Bistro and Trellis Rooms will be available via a sign-up sheet located at the Meadows receptionist desk.
  • Due to capacity restrictions, separate activities will be planned in The Meadows and The Maples.

We have maintained a “safe bubble” for over a year now.  As always, our residents and guests must continue to do all they can to mitigate possible COVID-19 transmission by maintaining 6 feet of social distancing, washing hands often and wearing face coverings over both the mouth and nose.

We are happy to say…Welcome Home Friends!

On-Site COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics Offer Convenience and Hope for Brighter Days

Here at Silver Maples of Chelsea, we’re starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel of our long COVID-19 journey. It’s been nearly a year since we had to shut our doors to visitors, completely change the dining and programming processes, and focus entirely on keeping our residents safe. The efforts-- mirroring the changes and sacrifices we all have made to weather this pandemic—are certainly paying off, as there has not been a single resident diagnosed with COVID-19.

As many in the 65+ age group struggle to find opportunities to receive vaccines, Silver Maples residents and staff were fortunate to have access to in-house clinics operated by CVS Pharmacy. Each vaccine clinic offered brought a day of excitement and hope. And that hope stretched beyond Silver Maples staff, residents, and families. Our on-site vaccine clinics were meticulously coordinated to be safe, efficient and fun. Residents and staff who were vaccinated were offered an “I Got The Shot” Silver Maples button to commemorate the day and an individually wrapped anti-COVID cookie for the road. During the 12-minute post-shot observation, attendees also had the opportunity to pose with our “We’re in this Together” photo frame and share why they chose to get the vaccine.  Shirley Lancaster, who has lived at Silver Maples five years along with her husband Tom, appreciated the convenience of having the on-site clinic. “[hosting the clinic] was a great idea. It went as smoothly as it could go; there were no hitches!”

At this point, more than 200 residents and staff have received at least one dose of the Moderna vaccine, including 100% of our Meadows Assisted Living residents, who, more than two-weeks out from their second dose, have reached peak immunity. Sara Smith, who has been a Resident Care Associate in the Meadows for nearly 7 years was so inspired by the Meadows Residents being 100% vaccinated, she shared “our residents were willing to protect me, so I was vaccinated to protect them too!”

“With our entire Assisted Living Resident population receiving both vaccines, we feel a sense of relief and hope as we continue to weather the pandemic” said Connie Napier, Director of the Meadows Assisted Living.

Though mask-wearing and social distancing will continue to be a part of our lives for a while, as more of our residents and staff continue to receive vaccinations, life starts taking steps toward “normal.” With restaurants re-opening, albeit with limited capacity, residents are once again able to dine together and make connections with neighbors and friends.

The quest of “shots in arms” is important, and a key step is ensuring that no dose is wasted. Silver Maples maintained a standby list of eligible community members, and at the end of the clinic day, 19 others were able to receive their vaccines, and will be returning to get their second dose when the final in-house clinic is offered in early March.

“Organizing on-site Vaccination Clinics with CVS offered our residents the comfort of staying indoors, while the CVS staff brought in all of the needed supplies,” said Silver Maples Director and CEO Julie Deppner. “The staff, residents and community members who were able to participate in these onsite clinics feel so incredibly fortunate for this life-saving opportunity.”

Visit the Silver Maples Facebook page to see photos from our on-site COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics.

Update: January 19, 2021

COVID-19 Vaccinations at Silver Maples

Making sure you get vaccinated early can help save your life and protect the lives of others!  Our seniors over 65 years are among the highest at risk for infection and severe illness from COVID-19.  We care about your health and getting vaccinated is an important step to prevent getting sick with COVID-19.

I am thrilled to be able to offer convenient access to the COVID-19 vaccine for all of our staff and residents!  We have partnered with CVS Health to provide on-site COVID-19 vaccinations for residents and staff free of charge.  We will be receiving the Moderna Vaccine. (Please see the Receptionist desk if you would like more information regarding Moderna.) The dates of these clinics are:

-  Wednesday, February 3, 2021 – Dose #1 for Villas / Maples, Dose #2 for Meadows & Staff

-  Wednesday, March 3, 2021 – Dose #2 for Villas / Maples

  • Our Maples and Villa Independent Living residents will sign up for an appointment via the online sign up, or our receptionist (Karen) will assist in making the appointment.  The link to making the online appointments will be provided via e-mail.
  • All Maples and Villa residents must complete the 2-part triplicate Consent Form that is available at the Maples Receptionist Desk. This form must be returned to the desk no later than Wednesday, January 27th. Residents must also provide a copy of their insurance card, both front and back.  Our staff can assist with making the copies.
  • Vaccinations will take place on February 3rd in the Maples Room at Silver Maples.
  • Our staff in the Meadows Assisted Living will manage all of the required paperwork for our Meadows residents and vaccinations will be administered in individual apartments.

COVID-19 vaccines are an important tool to help stop the pandemic.  However, even after vaccination, everyone will need to continue following all the current guidance to protect themselves and others, including wearing a mask, staying at least 6 feet away from others, and following guidance on visitation and infection control, as well as cleaning hands often.

Thank you again for all you are doing to stay safe!

Sincerely,

Julie Deppner

In recognition of the exponential growth in cases of COVID-19 in our State, and in order to protect our residents and our loved ones, we must align these Emergency Order restrictions with community life at Silver Maples of Chelsea. Therefore, beginning on Wednesday, November 18, 2020, the following restrictions will be in place through December 8th:

These are hard times, but brighter days are ahead! Let’s be sure we all do our part, especially as the holidays approach, to be certain we will be able to enjoy celebrations with our loved ones once again, one day, very soon. Stay Home and Stay Well my friends!

Updated Indoor Visitor Guidelines - Independent Living

The Indoor Visitor Guidelines that were released by MDHHS on October 26th included a new definition for “Residential Care Facilities” which no longer pertains to Independent Living.  It certainly feels a bit scary “opening up” the safe space we’ve created at our community these past several months, especially with the recent spike in COVID cases, therefore we paused for two weeks until permitting visitors. However, limited indoor visitation in our Independent Living Maples apartments and Villas is now permitted. Outdoor visits only are highly encouraged

According to the Washtenaw County Health Department, 9% of the COVID-19 cases in our county are in persons over 70 years of age and older. However, 95% of COVID related deaths come from the ages of 60 years and older.  See data located at: washtenaw.org/3108/Cases

With these rising cases and our vulnerable senior population, it is imperative we permit visitation safely, while not increasing the spread of the virus. Therefore, as of Thursday, November 12, 2020, indoor visitation guidelines are in effect for all Silver Maples Independent Living settings.

Please continue to do your part to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

Thank you for keeping our residents, and each other, safe and well!

Sincerely,
Julie Deppner

Visitor Restrictions and Group Activities in The Meadows

Governor Whitmer issued Executive Order #2020-188 on September 30, 2020, which extended the visitor restrictions for senior living communities in order to protect our seniors, one of our most vulnerable populations.  At this time, outdoor visits continue to be the only permitted visits at Silver Maples (for non-essential visitors).

Executive Order #2020-191 was also issued, which applies to The Meadows, our assisted living residence.  This executive order now allows for limited communal dining and indoor and outdoor resident group activities.  Over the next few days we will be gathering our Meadows residents in small groups, with social distancing guidelines observed, for events and dining!  Our Arbor Dining Room has been closed for several months and we are anxious to return our residents and staff to this beautifully redecorated space.  Of course, meal delivery will still be in place for any resident who would like to continue that option.

Our entire Meadows Programming Team, are excited to gather our residents for some activities they have been missing! As always, we will be adhering to our COVID-19 prevention protocols.

Stay Well and Stay Safe My Friends!

Sincerely,
Julie Deppner
Executive Director/CEO

Update: August 31, 2020

Visitor Restrictions, Reminders and Updates

We continue to ensure your loved ones at Silver Maples are staying safe and are actively engaged in our vibrant community during these difficult times.  On Friday, August 28, 2020, Governor Whitmer extended the restrictions for visitors in senior living with Executive Order #2020-174.  This order prohibits entry into senior living communities in order to protect our seniors, one of our most vulnerable populations. Other highlights of this Order include:

  • Visitors are prohibited, except for those who are visiting an individual that is in serious or critical condition or in hospice care; providing the support of activities of daily living; or performing official governmental functions.
  • All staff members, residents and visitors must wear a covering over his or her nose and mouth when indoors, or within 6 feet of another person.
  • Silver Maples must perform a health evaluation of all individuals seeking entry into our organization.

We use these guidelines to determine who is an essential visitor and allowed entry into our organization.  A list of approved visitors is maintained at the Receptionist Desk.  The only visitors allowed at Silver Maples are those who are on the list.

Please note, the Governor’s Order is explicit.  Silver Maples could receive a misdemeanor and fined if we violate this order.  More importantly, every visitor that enters Silver Maples puts our residents at risk.

These are hard days. I know we all miss our family and friends!  I encourage you to continue to enjoy a good old-fashioned phone call, schedule some outdoor visits, and use our staff to assist you with ZOOM calls and other social media/electronic communications.  It’s important to stay connected.  It’s important to stay safe and well!

The Executive Order continues through September 30, 2020.

Sincerely,
Julie Deppner
Executive Director/CEO

Update: August 3, 2020

Visitor Restrictions and Screening Procedures at Silver Maples

Visitor Restrictions at Silver Maples:

We know it is important for our residents to visit with friends and family.  However, we MUST restrict visitors inside our community.  It is truly for the safety of all of our residents and staff, as well as an Executive Order from the Governor, #2020-156, which extends through August 31, 2020. Here are some ways to safely visit with your family:

  • A good old-fashioned telephone call
  • Online, using ZOOM and other social media/electronic methods. Our staff are more than happy to help assist residents with setting these up!  Please see Emily, our Director of Programming, Mike Johnson, our Transportation and Technology expert, or put in a work order and we will be sure to get it to the right person.
  • Schedule an outdoor visit, while following the 6 feet of distance, cloth face covering and hand washing guidelines.
  • For our Meadows Assisted Living Residents, please be sure to call the Meadows receptionist desk to schedule your visit ahead of time (734-475-1490). Our staff will do our best to accommodate your timeframe.

Finally, please know that ESSENTIAL visitors only, who meet the criteria outlined below, are allowed inside Silver Maples of Chelsea.  All visitors must be screened at the front desk, therefore they should not be coming in side doors or after hours.  This COVID screening is required by law.  Essential visits are defined as:

  • Necessary for the provision of medical care (A nurse or doctor)
  • Necessary to support the Activities of Daily Living (A caregiver assisting with medications, showers and feeding)
  • Visitation for a resident in critical condition or in hospice care.

Screening at Silver Maples:

Did you know every vendor, staff member, and essential visitor who enters Silver Maples must complete a screening process before entry? This process is required every single day.  In addition, as of August 3, 2020, we are asking all Silver Maples Independent Living residents who leave Silver Maples overnight, for one night or more, to complete a screening process upon return.

The Screening process is simple.  Upon return from any overnight stay, residents need to stop by the Receptionist’s Desk between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM, and will be asked to sign a document responding to the 3 questions listed below:

  • Have you traveled internationally or been in close contact with anyone who has traveled internationally within the last 14 days?
  • Have you had close contact with or cared for someone diagnosed with COVID-19 within the last 14 days?
  • Have you experienced any cold or flu-like symptoms in the last 14 days (fever, sore throat, cough, shortness of breath, diarrhea or other respiratory problem?)

We will also check for fevers by taking temperatures, using a touchless, forehead digital thermometer. Temperatures must be below 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

Resident(s) signature(s) will verify a negative response to all of the screening questions.  Any resident answering YES to any of the above questions, must quarantine in their apartment for 14 days, or until a negative COVID-19 test result is received.

This screening process is one more layer of protection to be sure our community remains COVID-19 free!  As cases continue to rise in our area, we want to keep our staff and residents safe until cases decrease and we can start to lift some restrictions.

Thank you for continuing to do all you can to maintain our safe environment. As always, wear your face coverings, keep 6 feet of social distancing, and wash/sanitize your hands.

I’m so proud to say we continue to be COVID-19 free at Silver Maples.  Let’s keep it that way!

Sincerely,
Julie Deppner
Executive Director/CEO

COVID-19 Precautions Update

The warm weather has brought some much needed relief for many of us.  Having the opportunity to go outside for a bit has truly lifted all of our spirits after those long winter and spring months.  It’s great to see more of our residents’ faces!  Below are some responses to some frequently asked questions that you may find helpful:

If I travel or leave Silver Maples for some time, do I have to be quarantined for 14 days upon my return?

Our residents living in Independent Living do not need to quarantine. However, it is important to remember we are living in a communal setting and are a high risk population.  We need to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as much as possible. All of our residents need to continue to be to be smart and safe by wearing masks at all times in public, thoroughly washing/sanitizing hands, and practicing social distancing.  If they experience any respiratory symptoms, they should notify their physician and the receptionist desk immediately, and quarantine for 14 days, or until they receive a negative COVID-19 test result.  We do require new residents moving in without a negative COVID test to quarantine for their first 14 days.

Due to the needed care and the required additional protections for this more vulnerable population, the residents who live in The Meadows Assisted Living are only permitted to go off site for extenuating circumstances and in many cases would require a negative COVID test or quarantine upon return.

If we are required to wear masks, why are we now able to dine with others?

In Independent Living, we have been following the Governor’s “Safe Start” plan and using those guidelines to slowly open up Silver Maples.  Dining room capacity is at 50% and tables are spaced 6 feet apart. However, we encourage residents to only participate in what they feel comfortable with.  We continue to provide delivery and carry out service as well. And, of course, we require face masks to be worn in all public, communal areas.

Our Assisted Living is licensed by the State of Michigan and there are specific Executive Orders that apply.  Currently, we are prohibited from internal and external group activities, as well as communal dining.  Our care givers and programming staff continue to provide individual services, and some small group activities in the hallways, such as exercise and Bingo. They are also able to take walks outside and see their family via Zoom and through their windows.  We recently implemented pre-arranged outside visits with essential family members.  Executive Order 2020-148, which extends protections and restrictions for Assisted Living residents, continues through August 10, 2020.

What other changes are in place due to COVID-19?

There are other Executive Orders in place that limit some of the activities and the working environment here at Silver Maples.  Governor Whitmer’s Executive Order 2020-110, provides restrictions on events, gatherings and businesses. Specifically,

  • Indoor social gatherings and events may not exceed 10 people
  • Outdoor social gatherings and events among persons not part of a single household are permitted, but only to the extent that:
  • The gathering or event does not exceed 100 people, and
  • People not part of the same household maintain six feet of distance from one another
  • Any work that is capable of being performed remotely (i.e., without the worker leaving his or her home or place of residence) must be performed remotely

I’ve seen some visitors in our community.  Who are they, and how are they allowed in?

The Governor’s Executive Order 2020-136, Prohibits Visitors at Resident Care Facilities, which includes both Assisted and Independent Senior Living communities.  However, visitors are permitted for the provision of medical care, the support of activities of daily living, or the exercise of power of attorney.  We require these visitors to perform a health evaluation prior to entry, which includes symptoms of a respiratory infection, such as fever, cough or shortness of breath. This order continues until July 24, 2020.  We also can permit some outdoor vendors for the purpose of essential business and critical infrastructure.  (We recently had contractors in to fix some leaky pipes.)

On June 17, outdoor visits with family members were officially permitted and guidelines were provided.  We know connecting with family is more important than ever for the health and well-being of our residents and ask that you adhere to the guidelines for the safety of all.

What will happen if we get a case of COVID-19 at Silver Maples?

AS of July 18, 2020, Silver Maples has ZERO cases of COVID-19!  Thank you for continuing to help us provide a SAFE environment for all of our residents and staff.  If there is a diagnosed case at Silver Maples, you will be notified within 12 hours.  Due to HIPPA regulations, we cannot reveal the name of the resident, but you would be informed of when or where contact with the diagnosed person may have taken place.  All areas of contact will be disinfected. Anyone who had close contact with someone with COVID-19 will be asked to stay home for 14 days after exposure based on the time it takes to develop illness.

How can I get more facts about COVID-19?

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) is a great place to get the facts on COVID-19.  I encourage you to visit their website:  https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus

Stay Home Stay Safe Executive Order Extended and Silver Maples' Safe Start Plan

On Thursday, May 7, Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued Executive Order 2020-77, which extends the suspension of certain activities that are not necessary to sustain or protect life. Some of the highlights of this order that directly impact residents and staff of Silver Maples include:

Executive Order (No. 2020-77): Expires May 28, 2020
• All individuals living in Michigan are ordered to stay at home or at their place of residence.

• All public and private gatherings of any number of people occurring among persons not part of a single household are prohibited.

Additionally, Governor Whitmer presented the Michigan Safe Start Plan. There are six phases in this plan, we are currently in Phase 3.

Recent Governor's Executive Orders: How Is Life At Silver Maples Affected?

As we move into the month of May, we have all been adjusting to a new way of life, with almost 8 weeks of social distancing. It’s been fun to see each other during staff walks and “Zoom” meetings, but I know we all anxiously await the day we can converse in person, enjoy meals together and hug our loved ones! Below are a few updates regarding the recent Governor’s Executive Orders and what they mean for life at Silver Maples:

Executive Order (No. 2020-72): Expires May 31, 2020

  • This order limits visitors at Silver Maples. Specifically, it prohibits entry into health care facilities, except those who are needed to:
    • Provide Medical Care
    • Support activities of daily living or
    • Assist family due to serious critical conditions or in hospice care
  • This order also requires all staff and visitors to wear face coverings and maintain six feet from others.
  • Silver Maples must also perform a health evaluation of all individuals that seek entry into our community and deny entry to individuals who do not meet the evaluation criteria.

Stay-At-Home Order Extension (No. 2020-59): Expires May 15, 2020

  • This order limits all non-essential business operations, but now allows for some exceptions, including lawn care and plant purchases using delivery/pick-up.

Enhanced Protections for Staff & Residents at LTC Facility (EO 2020-50): Expires May 13, 2020

  • This order provides directives and procedures related to communication, transfers and discharges of COVID-19 affected residents. (We continue to have zero cases of COVID-19 at Silver Maples!)

Like you, I so look forward to getting back to our new normal. In the meantime, stay well and be safe my friends!

Silver Maples Receives a Grant from the Chelsea Community Foundation

We recently learned that Silver Maples of Chelsea was among 11 non-profit organizations to be awarded an immediate needs grant from the Chelsea Community Foundation.  The CCF Board decided to proactively address the needs in the community by offering grants to non-profit organizations who are deemed essential in providing critical care and services during this pandemic.  At this time we are unsure where the shortfalls are going to come, however this generous, unexpected grant will provide breathing room for our organization and our residents down the road.  Their generosity is greatly appreciated.

Face Coverings: Requirements and Recommendations

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states it is CRITICAL to maintain 6-feet social distancing to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The CDC is additionally advising the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others.

Silver Maples of Chelsea will now be requiring our staff to wear a face covering while on-site during their work hours.

In addition, we are recommending all residents wear a face covering when out in public.  If you are an allowable visitor (providing medical care, support of activities of daily living like bathing or eating, or are providing care for critical conditions or hospice care) we ask that you wear a face covering.

We continue to have several donations of homemade cloth face coverings that are available at the main desks, as well as disposable masks.

Please assist us in keeping Silver Maples residents and staff safe.

Stay healthy and safe friends!

April 6, 2020 - Visitor Restrictions Have Been Extended in the Meadows and Include the Maples

On Sunday, April 5, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-37, which extended restrictions on entry into residential care facilities.

Based on this Executive Order, Silver Maples of Chelsea must prohibit all visitors, in both the Meadows Assisted Living and the Maples Independent Living, except those that are necessary for:

  • Medical care
  • Support of activities of daily living like bathing or eating, or
  • Critical conditions or hospice care

This order is in place through May 3, 2020.

Reminder, Governor Whitmer’s Executive Order #2020-21 directs all Michiganders to STAY in their homes unless:

  • You are part of the critical infrastructure workforce
  • Engage in an outdoor activity
  • Performing tasks necessary for the health and safety of yourself or your family, (like going to the hospital or grocery store.)

Additionally, all public and private gatherings of any number of people are also prohibited. This order is in place until April 13, 2020.  (Although, it is expected to be extended.)

The bottom line is no visitors, and stay home.  That doesn’t sound like much fun!!  Please be patient and know we all want to be well and safe.  And know, this too shall pass…

Silver Maples of Chelsea Is Doing Our Part To Stay Safe And Save Lives

On Monday, March 23rd, Governor Whitmer signed the "Stay Home, Stay Safe" executive order. For at least the next (3) three weeks, all Michigan businesses and operations must temporarily suspend in-person operations that are not necessary to sustain or protect life.  Michiganders must stay in their homes unless they’re a part of that critical infrastructure workforce, engaged in an outdoor activity, or performing tasks necessary to the health and safety of themselves or their family, like going to the hospital or grocery store.

Here are just some of the ways we continue to work together to protect our community and families as we implement the new Stay Home, Stay Safe Executive Order:

  • We have implemented delivery service for all of our residents for every meal – breakfast, lunch and dinner. Made-to-order dinners are also available for pick-up every evening.  Our Café continues to provide delicious options for our residents to purchase in-house rather than leaving our community.
  • Although public and private gatherings of any number are now prohibited, virtual activities are being planned and implemented by our creative Programming Staff. Our Assisted Living residents continue to enjoy one-on-one activities and games, as well as engaging conversation with our caring staff members.
  • We are committed to providing transportation for those essential tasks necessary for the health and safety of our residents.
  • We encourage our residents to engage in outdoor recreation, while remaining at least six feet from their friends and neighbors.
  • All of our valued staff are important to us! For the safety of our residents and our staff, we are restricting the number of workers present in-person, promoting remote work to the fullest extent, keeping employees and residents at least six feet from one another, and implementing social distancing measures at all times.
  • We continue to restrict all visitors, except those allowed for resident care, medical care and life threatening situations. We are utilizing all available staff members to help us monitor our entrances in order to keep vendors and other non-essential guests from entering our community.
  • Our care staff are implementing safety precautions on a daily basis, which include continuous hand washing, sanitizing, monitoring themselves for symptoms, and practicing social distancing in public places.

We care about our friends and neighbors at Silver Maples and will continue to be vigilant in not only providing the best care for our residents, but also putting supportive measures in place for them to be safe and well!

Sincerely,
Julie A. Deppner

Culinary Services Implements Pickup and Delivery Service

As we move into a new dimension of the COVID-19 virus, we want to share some additional precautions taking place at Silver Maples as the situation continues to evolve.  Our main priority is to protect the health and safety of our Residents and our Staff. The best way to weather this situation is to understand, support and adhere to these changes.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has stated the COVID-19 virus poses a health threat to our aging population, especially those with underlying health issues such as heart disease, lung disease and diabetes.  They are recommending everyone to minimize their social interactions in large settings, specifically limiting gathering in groups of 10 or less.

For these reasons, effective Thursday, March 19, 2020 we are discontinuing communal dining in all our dining venues (Arbor Dining Room, Trellis Dining Room and Bistro). Tray service will be offered until further notice for residents in the Maples and Meadows, pick up service is available for residents in the Villas. Specific details regarding tray service times, pick up times and locations have been communicated to residents and their families via memo and email.  Please check your email inbox for further details.

We hope this is only a temporary solution and appreciate your patience and understanding.

Thank you!

Patti Kucera                                                                                                        Director of Culinary Services
