We are thrilled to congratulate Silver Maples resident Ellen Thompson on being named one of The Detroit News’ 2025 Michiganians of the Year.
Each year, this award honors individuals who make Michigan a better place through their selflessness, creativity, and commitment to others. This year’s class of 10 honorees includes community leaders, educators, philanthropists, artists, and advocates who are changing lives across our state. Seeing a familiar face among such an impressive group makes this recognition even more special.
At 92, Ellen continues to inspire all of us through her lifelong dedication to education and students. Alongside her husband Bob, Ellen created the Thompson Working Family Scholarships, ensuring that thousands of students from working families can pursue their dreams of a college degree without overwhelming debt. Her vision has already touched so many lives, with thousands more to come.
Too often, society assumes that growing older means becoming less relevant or stepping back from contributing in meaningful ways. Ellen beautifully shatters that stereotype. She proves that wisdom, compassion, and purpose only grow stronger with age. Her life is a powerful reminder that older adults remain vital changemakers, leaders, and visionaries who continue to shape communities and create a better world for generations to come.
We are so proud to have Ellen and Bob as part of our community. She is a shining example that purpose, kindness, and impact have no age limit.
